A detailed description is given of the properties of 14 Aeromonas hydrophila strains: morphological, growth in cultures, biochemical and sensitivity to antibiotics. Three of the strains were agglutinated by Shigella schmitzi antiserum. Most of the strains were isolated from 8 cases of enteritis, one from a fatal case of meningitis, and three strains from the meconium of a neonate and, subsequently, from necropsy specimens. Except for the strain isolated from the meninges, the others were obtained in pure or predominant cultures, in the absence of other pathogens. The possible aetiologic role of the isolated strains is discussed.
