Emergency treatment of severe or malignant hypertension.

Rapid blood pressure control can now be achieved in virtually all hypertensive patients by using either intravenous Hyperstat or Nipride. When oral drugs are used, the combination of Apresoline, Inderal, and a diuretic in rapidly increasing doses will control most patients. In patients resistant to these drugs, the addition of Catapres or the substitution of Loniten for Apresoline should allow satisfactory blood pressure control and decrease hospitalization time.
