Studies were conducted into the effects of intragestational hypotension and Broca's index of mothers on the birth weights of newborns, with reference being to intensive pregnancy care documentation filed for the years 1977 through 1979 at the Gynaecological Hospital of Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena, GDR. The low birth weights quoted in literature were not confirmed by the data available to the authors. - Yet, close relationship was found to exist between the mother's relative Broca's index and birth weight. Hence, that factor should be taken into due consideration, whenever studies are undertaken into the problem of newborns with low birth weight.
