Hyperinsulinism may reduce glycerol-3-phosphate and dihydroxyacetone phosphate production and thus impair phospholipid synthesis and surfactant production in the lung. This mechanism could be responsible for the increased incidence of respiratory-distress syndrome in the infants of diabetic mothers.
