As chronic diseases claim a growing proportion of our population's morbidity, health practitioners are increasingly concerned with the impact of diseases on the physical limitations, psychological status, social role, and overall quality of life of patients. While health professionals have traditionally supplemented their clinical assessment skills with physiologic measures such as temperature, white cell counts, pulmonary function tests, and enzyme levels, as well as functional measures such as range of motion and mobility, they are less facile with measures that describe the limitations in physical, psychological, and social functioning of patients. These latter factors may have a greater overall influence on patient status than physiologic and function indices alone.
