This paper contains a collection of data concerning different holders of medical, especially pharmacological functions in ancient Rome and a discussion of their social status. There were no clear official distinctions between the several kinds of drugsellers in Rome, and all of them belonged to the class of ordinary shopkeepers. Drugselling especially flourished in the first two centuries AD because of economical welfare and intensive foreign commercial contacts.
