Abstract

This article deals with the question to what extent Greek and Roman doctors used the names of famous physicians without being related to them. Many doctors were called Asclepiades or Hippocrates. In Rome, these names were associated with Asclepius and with the great Hippocrates of Cos and can therefore be regarded as professional names, which fathers (who were doctors themselves) gave their sons because they were expected to continue this profession.
