There is talk of a crisis in Germany ('Pflegenotstand'); the lack of staff and the fall in the number of students therefore make it most important for nursing schools to reflect on their problem management capacity. This paper offers some of the findings from a research study which inquires into why students discontinue their training and explores how satisfaction might be increased. This article focuses on the impact of assessment on the students' learning. It argues that it is crucial for the implementation of changes in the training to differentiate between formal qualification (examinations, certificates, etc.) and factual qualification (professional competence).
