This paper reviews the in vitro effects of antidepressants on blockade of uptake of norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine at the synapse (rat synaptosomal preparations), as well as blockade of histamine H1, muscarinic, alpha 1-adrenergic, and dopamine D2 receptors in human brain tissue. The potency of an antidepressant at this blockade is predictive of the likelihood of its causing certain side effects and drug-drug interactions.
