The study revealed those changes in connective tissue components and validity of alveolar macrophages in bronchial lavage, which were in correlation with duration and severity of exposure to coal and rock dust. The data proved that roentgenologio changes in the lungs are preceded by changed quantity of viable alveolar cells, higher content of hexauronic acids and hexoses associated with proteins. The stated biochemical tests could be applied to early diagnosis in individuals prone to pneumoconiosis.
