We report a published case of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) in which conventional cytogenetic analysis supported the presence of an unbalanced t(12;17)(p11;p11). However, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis, with specific DNA libraries from chromosomes 17 and 21 (chromosome painting), demonstrated that the translocation was actually an unbalanced t(17;21)(p11;q11).
