The discovery of electroencephalography and the development of modern anticonvulsants have made it possible to improve substantially the diagnosis and treatment of the epileptic attack. Resistance to treatment and multiple lesions of some of the patients, however, still give rise to considerable problems. Also an unjustified resentment of the environment still produces additional difficulties for the epileptic child. The position of the epileptic within the family, in hospital, in school and at work is discussed in detail. Besides diagnostic and therapeutic measures, additional medical help to overcome social problems is often imperative.
