Kernberg O F
New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, New York.
Psyche (Stuttg). 1994 Jun;48(6):483-508.
In this highly condensed overview, the author sketches the present state of psychoanalysis in the United States and examines its scientific status, forms of organisation and training structures. In part one, Kernberg reflects on the debate conducted in 1989 in Psychoanalytic Quarterly on the future of psychoanalysis. In part two, he presents his own view, looking at psychoanalysis as a branch of learning, its theoretical variety, psychoanalytic treatment, training for analysts, psychoanalysis as a profession and the international situation. Although Kernberg concentrates on the American scenario, in many respects his remarks also present, mutatis mutandis, an accurate picture of the psychoanalytic landscape in Europe.
