A case-control study of isolated congenital limb deficiencies was performed in a ten-year (1975-1984) population-based Hungarian data set. It was appropriate to check the impact of a precautionary measure: the recommendation for a three-month interval between the discontinuation of contraceptive pill use and planned conception through mass media introduced in Hungary from 1977. The proportion of periconceptional pill use was significantly lower in the time period of 1979-84.
