Long-term care no longer refers to care delivered to elders residing exclusively in nursing homes. This article defines the demographics of long-term care in the 1990s, and describes the impact the independent-living movement is having on a radically changing scope of practice. Gaps in current understanding and expectations for the future of nursing research, education, and practice in this area are also explored.
