The association between alcohol use and accidental injury or death has been acknowledged for a long time. Alcohol is thought to contribute to 50,000 deaths per year and up to 500,000 hospital admissions annually in the UK. Thus, up to 40% of all hospitalisation relates directly or indirectly to alcohol.
