In 30 patients with chronic renal failure, who were treated by hemodialysis, we investigated smell and taste function. We compared these functions before and up to 6 months following hemodialysis. We also estimated the correlation of the level of urea in the patients' blood with taste and smell. We found a positive (though temporary) influence of hemodialysis upon taste and smell.
