The author remembers by invitation of the review a very master of the German surgery, his pioneership and his severe and efficient management. During his last years his image was grieved by disease and political disorders; after his death by movies and sensational books. Nevertheless remain his name and surgical deeds part of our history, especially his work establishing chest surgery.
