Wherever the successful surgeon, Ferdinand Sauerbruch, worked, headlines about his incredible fees appeared in the press. In 1912 and 1913, even the Zurich Cantonal Parliament investigated an alleged scandal regarding excessive fees demanded by Sauerbruch. However, the allegations were quickly proven false by the medical faculty and the accused himself. Nevertheless, the affair made headlines once again in 1931, which led to a clarifying exchange of letters between the rector of the University of Zurich and the surgeon, who was then working in Berlin.
