For the medical assessment and treatment of the elderly, both general and disease-induced deterioration in performance, in particular of the cognitive functions, has to be taken into consideration. Treatment with drugs must take account not only of the altered pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in the elderly, but also of possible drug-induced impairment of driving ability--which is already affected by physiological changes. Medical treatment of sick elderly drivers should be restricted to low-risk, well-proven and absolutely necessary medication. Studies on a sample of elderly drivers with diminished cognitive performance show that problem-specific drug treatment improves driving ability rather than impairing it.
对于老年人的医学评估和治疗，必须考虑到身体机能的普遍衰退以及疾病导致的机能衰退，尤其是认知功能的衰退。药物治疗不仅要考虑老年人药代动力学和药效学的改变，还要考虑药物可能导致的驾驶能力损害——而驾驶能力已经受到生理变化的影响。对患病老年驾驶员的药物治疗应限于低风险、经充分验证且绝对必要的药物。对认知能力下降的老年驾驶员样本进行的研究表明，针对具体问题的药物治疗可改善而非损害驾驶能力。
