Developmental psychologists tend to believe the early relationship between mother and baby has a major impact on the child's later cognitive, emotional and social development. Ruth Paradice argues that an infant's early relationship with its primary caretaker, though important, is but one in a rich social network and that babies may be more resilient than is generally believed.
