In infants at risk of developing allergies exclusive breast feeding during the first 4-6 months and introduction of solids after four months of age reduces the incidence of atopic syndromes at least up to 36 months of age. The protective effects of two antigen reduced infant formulae (marketed as "Hypoallergenic" in Austria) against atopy in infants at risk have been confirmed in longitudinal studies. The incidence of allergic symptoms was significantly reduced during the first 18-36 months if introduction of solids was delayed until 4-6 months of age. Antigen-reduced infant formulae and no solids should be given to infants at risk who are not exclusively breastfed during the first 4-6 months.
