Apart from projectional and plain radiographs, all images in a radiology department are obtained in a digital format and handled by computers. It is now technically possible to acquire a digital chest radiograph without the use of conventional film. There are advantages in the image processing of digital chest radiographs but the cost remains a compelling obstacle.
