A description is given of the occupational health and safety problems which are common to workers all over the world, where these must be tackled with a view to achieving coherent and ongoing occupational safety for workers in their jobs. Occupational safety and health will continue to be priorities in international collaboration. Although the nature of the problems and solutions vary as a function of real priorities and needs, it is necessary to place greater emphasis on the application of overall activities concerning safety and health so that measures can be made and policies taken whose development is sustainable. International standards must be turned into actions on a national and company level with the active participation of social workers. The tripartite consensus will continue to be necessary for drawing up plans of action adapted to local situations, with a view to introducing improvements in work centres.
