The need for patient education in general practice is increasing due to patient expectations and the changing nature of general practice. Computers have the potential to enhance the interaction between general practitioners and their patients and can enable patient education to be carried out efficiently and effectively. A number of computerised patient education tools are already available for use in general practice. The role of the Internet in patient education may also prove to be important.
