Many American organizations are moving toward self-directed work teams to increase quality and productivity and improve patient response. The team concept is not new to healthcare organizations. What is new is the role they are assuming as the primary tool for the redesign of the organization. This author, who is experienced in establishing self-directed work teams, describes how these teams can help healthcare restructuring.
