Abstract

BACKGROUND

To assess the use of laparoscopy in the management of persistent adnexal mass during the second trimester of pregnancy.

SUBJECTS

Six consecutive pregnant women undergoing laparoscopic surgery for persistent adnexal masses in the second trimester.

RESULTS

Laparoscopic removal of an adnexal mass was successfully performed in all patients. The median operating time was 37.5 minutes. There were no intra- and post-operative complications. Tocolytic therapy was not required and no patients developed uterine contractions. All patients delivered normal infants vaginally at term without complications.

CONCLUSION

With attention to the surgical technique, laparoscopic removal of persistent adnexal mass during the second trimester of pregnancy is safe and carries the same benefits over laparotomy as in non-pregnant women.
