Alcohol consumption is the norm in the UK population. Although there is strong evidence that a moderate alcohol intake is protective against coronary heart disease, alcohol has other potentially harmful effects on the cardiovascular system. Alcohol may raise blood pressure, damage the myocardium, precipitate arrhythmias and damage the developing fetal heart.
