Smoking in nursing homes: conflicts and challenges.

Nursing home social workers were surveyed to determine nursing home smoking policies and the effect these policies may have on resident and staff interaction. Data analyses suggest that in the past five years there has been a trend toward facilities becoming smoke-free. Facilities that permit smoking face greater conflicts between residents and staff. Social workers are expected to be resident advocates as well as mediators in such areas of conflict. This difficult position is further complicated by the social workers' personal views regarding smoking and "guest" standing in medical settings.
