Vascular surgery is a relatively young specialty and its separation from general surgery has raised many questions about its cost and effectiveness. In this article the evidence for the treatment of common vascular conditions is evaluated. The reasons for conflicting results and opinions, together with possible solutions for the future, are also discussed.
