Ectopic pregnancy is a well-known complication of in vitro fertilization/embryo transfer (IVF-ET). Although ectopic pregnancy after IVF-ET in patients with prior bilateral salpingectomy is uncommon, it can occur and may be a cornual implantation. Because of the possibility of early rupture with severe hemorrhage, special attention to cornual pregnancy after IVF-ET is warranted.
Three cases of cornual pregnancy occurred after IVF-ET. Two of these patients had prior bilateral salpingectomy, whereas another had prior tuboplasty for tubal disease.
Patients who had prior salpingectomy or tuboplasty with cornual patency undergoing IVF-ET are at risk for cornual pregnancy. Close monitoring of pregnancies in these patients is important to prevent a deleterious delay in treatment of a cornual pregnancy.
