Percutaneous procedures are proving themselves to be useful additions to the group of neurosurgical procedures for treating pain. They demand a different style of careful operating technique and they place heavy reliance on the gradual production of lesions to achieve the desired degree of denervation. Control of lesion position and extent through further advances in neurophysiological monitoring should give these procedures an even wider margin of safety and reliability.
