This article examines the challenge of implementing a safer handling policy in an environment which caters for the needs of people who have complex and profound disability. It explores how a moving and handling educational strategy has been developed and the effectiveness of the strategies employed. The impact of changing practice at ward level and the difficulties encountered will be discussed in light of the patients' complex needs. The effects of the strategy are outlined with regard to accident reporting and the impact of legislation regarding moving and handling in an environment where patients' needs have to be balanced with staff safety are considered.
