Of candidal vaginal cultures performed on 100 women who gave a history of a specific symptom complex, 85% were positive. In contrast, only 3% were positive in 100 women who did not have this history. The data indicate a definite relationship between the symptom complex and vaginal candidiasis. An additional 110 women had vaginal cultures on MacConkey's agar to determine the presence of gram-negative pathogens. The results suggest that a relationship may exist between the presence of vaginal candidiasis and an increased incidence of vaginal gram-negative organisms which could have important urologic significance.
