Home visits by public health nurses with knowledge of accident prevention strategies can reduce hazards to children. Several areas in Australia are developing "safe communities" in response to a WHO project. In several towns the public health nurse delivers age-related safety information to families during routine contacts. Health visitor education in the UK is falling to respond to the challenge of reducing the main cause of death in children aged 1-4 years because it is not giving practitioners adequate preparation for accident prevention work.
