The effect of narcotics--phenobarbital, morphine and ethanol on the hemolysis of erythrocytes in a hypotonic solution was studied. The narcotics under study are shown to influence the stability of the erythrocytes membranes. Behind the mechanism of stabilization apparrently lies the action of the said substances on the critical hemolytic volume of the cells. A common nature of some mechanisms underlying the action of phenobarbital, morphine and ethanol on the erythrocytes membranes is suggested.
