A Laerdal infant resuscitator was modified to permit simple delivery of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) in both stationary and transport situations. The device is useful for pulmonary support of critically ill infants when they are off mechanical ventilators and for ventilation of infants with respiratory distress in the delivery room. It has been used successfully at The Johns Hopkins Hospital since early 1981.
