Abstract

A departmental chairman's expectations for the leader of a division of child and adolescent psychiatry vary widely. The author shares his personal experiences in this role as he describes clinical practice goals, clinical service delivery, research productivity, teaching excellence, and faculty development, as well as other administrative issues. The current shortage in senior academic leadership is discussed, as is the question of when a division of child and adolescent psychiatry should become an autonomous department.
