Abstract

Of the three different ways to set up a peer-run warm line, beeper systems have the most advantages. Workers can take calls wherever they are, talk at length, and know who is calling before they call them back. In contrast, beneficial support amongst coworkers in an office setting gets offset by transportation difficulties leading to irregular hours of operation. With call forwarding, the convenience of working at home and easily finding substitute workers gets offset by time limits on calls and an inability to differentiate warm line calls from other calls. Such organizational differences impact the effective provision of peer support in these settings.
