An assessment of contemporary techniques for the diagnosis and management of hydrocephalus and brain edema are reviewed. Further refinements in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques may aid in the selection of patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) who respond to shunting.
