Fredrik August Wahlgren (1819-1877) studied medicin at the University of Lund and the Carolinska Institute in Stockholm. He took the degree "Licenciate of medicine" at the University in 1847 and the degree "Master of Surgery" at the Institute 1848 and defended his thesis for the degree "Doctor of Medicine" in Lund 1849. In the same year he started a journey to university laboratories and hospitals in Germany, France, Belgium and The Netherlands. He served as teacher in different positions and various medical disciplines, particularly in anatomy, at the Carolinska Institute and the Veterinary College in Stockholm as well as the University of Lund, where he in 1857 was appointed to professor of Zoology. He introduced comparative anatomy as a subject of zoology at the university.
