Abstract

BACKGROUND

Esophageal cancer is one of the most serious tumor diseases worldwide, owing to its rapid development and fatal prognosis in most cases. To compare epidemiologic characteristics, data published by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, Lyon, France and data from Masaryk Memorial Cancer Institute, Brno, Czech Republic were used.

METHODS

We conducted a search of selected Czech and foreign literature focused on the epidemiology of esophageal cancer and its main risk factors.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSION

An overview of esophageal cancer epidemiology is presented. Prevention of esophageal cancer should be based on early detection and surveillance of precancerous lesions, especially of Barrett's esophagus, and attention should also focus on modification of changeable risk factors, including tobacco smoking, alcohol abuse, and ingestion of hot and spicy food. Carefully designed epidemiologic studies, both descriptive and analytical, are required to increase understanding of the complexity of esophageal cancer etiology.

食管癌是全球最严重的肿瘤疾病之一,因为在大多数情况下其发展迅速且预后致命。为比较流行病学特征,使用了法国里昂国际癌症研究机构公布的数据以及捷克共和国布尔诺马萨里克纪念癌症研究所的数据。

方法

我们对选定的捷克和国外文献进行了检索,重点关注食管癌的流行病学及其主要危险因素。

结果与结论

本文概述了食管癌流行病学。食管癌的预防应基于对癌前病变,尤其是巴雷特食管的早期检测和监测,同时还应关注可改变的危险因素的改善,包括吸烟、酗酒以及食用辛辣食物。需要精心设计描述性和分析性的流行病学研究,以加深对食管癌病因复杂性的理解。
