Zeger, Liang, and Albert (1988, Biometrics 44, 1049-1060) discuss population-averaged and subject-specific models for the analysis of longitudinal data. In their example on respiratory disease in the child and the mother's smoking status, they give an incorrect interpretation to the regression coefficient for the subject-specific model.
