Safeguarding children in dental practice.

The dental team is well placed to notice signs of child abuse and neglect, yet research shows that UK dentists are unprepared for a role in protecting children at risk. This article describes how to recognize signs of child abuse and neglect and what to do when concerned about a child. It highlights that advice and support are available from colleagues in other health professions and social services. The concept of'safeguarding' children and promoting their welfare in dental practice is introduced.
