Abstract

AIM OF THE STUDY

The aerial parts of Pamburus missionis (Wight) Swingle (Rutaceae) are traditionally used in the treatment of swelling, chronic rheumatism, paralysis, and puerperal diseases.The aim of this work was to investigate the chemical composition and antibacterial activity of essential oil of Pamburus missionis against different bacterial strains.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The essential oil was obtained from fresh leaves by hydro distillation method and its chemical composition was analyzed by GC and GC-MS. The antibacterial activity was determined by disc diffusion and micro broth dilution assay.

RESULTS

GC-MS analysis of the essential oil revealed the presence of 1-tridecanol (38.4%), n-hexadecanoic acid (16.1%), oxygenated monoterpenes (14.4%), monoterpene hydrocarbons (3.1%) and eugenol (1.9%) as the major components. The oil exhibited antibacterial activity at 100 and 450 microg against the test organisms with inhibition zones of 7-25 mm and minimal inhibitory concentrations values in the range of 10-100 and >100 mg/ml.

CONCLUSION

The present study reveals the antibacterial potency of essential oil of Pamburus missionis. The use of Pamburus missionis in the treatment of various ailments and puerperal diseases can be attributed to its antibacterial property.

研究目的

滇南吴茱萸(芸香科)的地上部分传统上用于治疗肿胀、慢性风湿、瘫痪和产后疾病。本研究的目的是调查滇南吴茱萸精油的化学成分及其对不同细菌菌株的抗菌活性。

材料与方法

采用水蒸馏法从新鲜叶片中提取精油,并通过气相色谱(GC)和气相色谱 - 质谱联用(GC-MS)分析其化学成分。通过纸片扩散法和微量肉汤稀释法测定抗菌活性。

结果

精油的GC-MS分析表明,主要成分包括1 - 十三醇(38.4%)、正十六烷酸(16.1%)、氧化单萜(14.4%)、单萜烃类(3.1%)和丁香酚(1.9%)。该精油在100和450微克时对受试微生物表现出抗菌活性,抑菌圈直径为7 - 25毫米,最低抑菌浓度值在10 - 100毫克/毫升和>100毫克/毫升范围内。

结论

本研究揭示了滇南吴茱萸精油的抗菌效力。滇南吴茱萸用于治疗各种疾病和产后疾病可归因于其抗菌特性。
