The authors describe the measurement of cardiac output by Doppler echocardiography in neonates and infants. After reviewing theoretical considerations, the authors review the various practical aspects of the method. They emphasize the need for an excellent technique so that possible errors are avoided. In their experience, the most appropriate measurement site is at the sinotubular junction of the aorta, as the velocity signal is obtained by subcostal and the diameter measured by parasternal long axis view.
