Today the Freud Archives, held by the Library of Congress (Washington), are the largest collection of documents pertaining to the life and work of Sigmund Freud. Their foundation and development were essentially due to the initiative and the passionate labor of K. R. Eissler who operated in close coordination with Anna Freud. Based on the correspondence between Eissler and A. Freud, the paper highlights the first five years of this achievement und discusses the policy of the Archives which has been the subject of some controversy in recent decades. Eissler's Progress Report covering the years 1951-1969 is reproduced in an appendix.
