Lead poisoning from chronic industrial exposure is not uncommon. Early diagnosis is important in avoiding irreversible effects.A good occupational history is key to alerting the unsuspecting physician to the correct diagnosis. Blood lead levels are useful but ridden with shortcomings. Specific tests to assess functional impairment, such as urinary aminolevulinic acid (ALA) and coproporphyrins should be included in the diagnostic work-up.Lead poisoning is a preventable disease well worth the consideration of the family practitioner.
