The cooperation of professionals is sought in the way in which they counsel parents with mentally retarded children. Problems have arisen from existing societal attitudes and prejudices which have had the effect of misguiding those who provide information and advice, such as the family physician. Scientific studies of attitudes have led to some understanding of attitude formation and change, offering some approaches to easing the problem.
