The problems of alcohol abuse are rampant in society and permeate the Emergency Department experience. The cost to society as measured by social, medical, occupational, and legal effects is exceedingly high and probably underestimated. Emergency physicians have the opportunity to intervene in this vicious cycle and must learn their role in the process.
